Chapter Five

Elle didn’t know how long she’d stood, paralyzed, watching the burned carcass of Kendra’s SUV with revulsion as her friend’s life evaporated before her eyes. Her throat constricted with emotion. She couldn’t stop trembling as her heart broke at the loss of a woman who had been there for her more times than she could count. Kendra didn’t have any siblings, and her parents had died when she was in high school in a car accident. In all the ways that mattered, they had become each other’s family, and now she was gone.

Why? The question echoed in Elle’s head. She had no answers but she damn sure was going to get some.

“Ma’am, are you hurt?”

“N-no.” She shook her head, gazing at the male paramedic standing beside her. “I don’t know,” she answered. Her voice made her head spin. It was too calm and sounded foreign, as if it belonged to someone else.

Nothing about this is calm. My friend is dead.

“Let’s get a look at that cut on your head.”

His words barely registered and neither did the fact that she was moving toward the ambulance. She sat on the edge of the bumper as the man took her vitals and asked her questions she couldn’t give a damn about. He cleansed her scrapes and the cut on her head. Elle flinched.

“Sorry. It’s a deep one,” the paramedic said, “but your vitals appear to be fine. I think it would be best if we get you to the hospital to have them check you out further, in case of a concussion.”

“She was my friend.” Elle gazed over at the wreckage.

“I’m sorry for your loss, ma’am,” he replied, placing a thick bandage at her hairline.

“I-I don’t know what happened.”

“It appears a bomb went off, ma’am.”

She ran a hand through her hair and tried to stand up but tilted to the side. “I have to go.”

“Whoa… I don’t think that’s a good idea. Let’s get you checked out and—”

Elle glared at him. “I’m fine! I will get checked out later. I have my car down the street.”

“It’s against my better judgment.”

“I’m sure it is, but I have another pressing matter. You see, my best friend has just been killed,” she barked, not caring about the affronted look on his face.

Elle jumped off the ambulance, her booted feet connecting with the fresh snow. She inhaled the smell of the debris, the myriad emotions surrounding her like a hunger-ravaged crowd, nearly suffocating her with their strength. She had to be stronger, for Kendra. In mere days, her life had been turned upside down. First learning that Monty was her father, then his death and now…

It couldn’t be connected…could it? What if the bomb had been meant for her? Elle shuddered. Durant had warned that Monty’s allegiances were turning faster than he could in his grave. Why hadn’t she thought to get Kendra out of harm’s way—maybe then she’d still be alive. Had she gotten her friend killed tonight?

The thought that one of Monty’s enemies was targeting those closest to Elle made her skin crawl.
