Kane Hatfield smiled. “Well, well, well. Mrs. Day out here all alone.”

Frantically she tried to turn Warrior. Instantly Kane was beside her, grabbing her reins. She struggled briefly before he laughed and swept her off the horse into his arms. His hands were lightning quick as he yanked the pistol from the waistband of her denim pants and flung the weapon away. He swung his leg over the horse and dropped to the ground, pulling Caroline down with him. She fought wildly, but her strength was no match for his.

In seconds he had her on the ground on her back while he sat astride her. He lashed her wrists together swiftly, dragging her as she kicked and struggled until he could tie the other end of the rope around a tree. He straightened up to look down at her, and Caroline suffered an icy stab of fear.

He dropped on his haunches beside her.

“Now, we’re going to get to be friends. You’re going to learn how to act real nice to me.”

“Why?” she asked, trying to control the terror that was making her stomach churn. “You can have almost any woman you want.”

His grin vanished, and she drew her breath in surprise at the anger that flashed across his features.

“That’s right. I don’t have women treat me like dirt. And that damned husband of yours knocked out one of my teeth.” His voice changed and a sly, malicious smile returned. “You tell him I remember losing my tooth in that fight. You tell him you paid me back in full for that tooth.”

She pulled at the rope around her wrists. No one could hear her scream; no help would come. She stared into Kane’s blue eyes and saw his smug pleasure, and the lust that soon would be vented on her.

“Scared, ain’t you?” he asked with a laugh.

She wouldn’t answer, and he slapped her, his hand a vicious crack in the stillness. She gasped and bit her lip to keep from crying out. He laughed again and it was a sound she would never forget—a noise like an animal.

Kane shifted his weight to his knees. His voice was thick with anticipation. “We’ve got hours alone. We’re going to be the best of friends by the time I tell you good-bye. And you’ll never turn your nose up at me again in town. You’ll smile and you’ll come out to my place when I want you to.” She wouldn’t answer or talk to him and he continued, “You don’t think so now, but you’ll see. I’m right.” He ran his hand over her breasts and she shivered and rolled away from him. He laughed and pulled her back, holding her easily with one arm.

“You didn’t like that, but you will. Been a long time since that husband of yours was in your bed. Has the Mex been taking his place?”

She stared at him, a flare of stubborn resistance keeping her quiet in spite of her fear.

“You don’t want to talk to me, huh?” He laughed again.
