Tambria Read, the high school art teacher and local historian, was not a member of First Baptist at the time, but she attended services occasionally and knew most members. She had taught several of their kids over the years. When she heard the horrific news, she immediately texted her friends Karla and Bryan Holcombe. “Please tell me you’re all right,” she had texted. (Telling me that story months later, she cried, recalling that moment.)

She drove into town from her country home a couple of miles away and unlocked the museum so first responders would have access to the copy machine. She drove to the Community Building three blocks from the museum, where volunteers and first responders were getting organized to help family members of people killed or wounded. When she drove up, family members, anxious and distraught, had just received wristbands so law enforcement could identify them.

As she stood outside talking to the Wilson County sheriff, the county judge, and the county attorney, Michelle Shields walked out. She already knew that her mother, Lula White, was among the dead.

Michelle saw Tambria. The two women knew each other, but not well. Michelle was Tambria’s regular bank teller in Floresville; Tambria had known Michelle’s kids at school. Tears flowing, they embraced.

Michelle stepped back and looked at Tambria, then at the county officials. Her face was almost as pale as her snow-white hair. “I know who did it,” she said, her anguish so intense she almost choked on the words.

“Have you told the FBI?” the county attorney asked.

“Not yet,” Michelle said.
