A fascinating finding in this research is that both sets of beliefs are self-validating. People who believe their fate is under the control of outside forces act in a way that confirms that belief. People who know they can do things to make life better act in a way that confirms their belief.

Thriving During Constant Change

The more internally directed you are, the better you will be at thriving in conditions of many smaller, constant changes. These frequent smaller changes can sneak up on you and accumulate, one by one, without being fully noticed. Because you are aware of these subtle occurrences—even subconsciously—you adjust to this, adapt to that, and keep on going.

In today’s world, where change has become constant, new skills are needed. In the past we could expect that a change was a one-time event to be gotten through until things settled down again. In the past, we could settle into a job and expect to keep it until retirement. People coming into the workforce today have to be prepared for four, five, or six careers.

In the past, a company might change hands once in a worker’s lifetime. A relative getting divorced was a rare occurrence. You might never receive a notice from your bank informing you that it has a new name because it was purchased by a larger company. Now such changes are frequent.

All these changes come with an emotional price. Your energy is stretched thin. You feel irritated when your favorite store moves to a different location or goes out of business. You may feel a bit lost, as if the world you are living in wasn’t one you know.

To handle constant change effectively requires that you first be conscious of the changes. Take some time to look at the following list of ways of experiencing life that applies to actions, thoughts, and behaviors of the past and how these are different from the now. Add more differences taken from your own experience. It would be very helpful to get together with others to talk about these changes.
