The Armed Self-Defense Debate

When a person takes the life of an attacker, in self defense, they are usually judged very harshly by the media and society at large. I don’t expect that this will change any time soon; even after a WCS. From the comfort and security of their living room couch, people with little to no knowledge of the actual facts assume that there must have been some other, non-violent, way to have handled the situation, to have avoided the loss of life. The unfortunate incident usually becomes a referendum on the use of deadly force, and the ownership of firearms, with little or no attention paid to the fact that the person that was shot and/or killed was a criminal trying to kill or cause serious bodily injury to the real victim, who did nothing to provoke the attack.

It’s very easy to criticize after-the-fact, especially if none of those passing judgment were actually there when the events played out. I always wonder if these Monday Morning Quarterbacks would have handled it any differently if they had been the ones attacked. Maybe they would have defused the situation by appealing to the attacker’s sense of basic human kindness and morality. Or maybe they would have surrendered their life to the attacker just to avoid using any violence. Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Remember your first choice will usually be to flee, if that option is available to you.

Deadly force with a firearm is a politically charged topic, with passionate opinions on all sides. Some folks strongly believe that no one, expect law enforcement should ever have access to any firearms – and they make no exceptions for self defense. On the other extreme there are folks who advocate for a fully armed citizenry with absolutely no restrictions whatsoever. This is a debate as contentious as religion, politics, abortion, and birth control and one not likely to be resolved anytime soon. This ridiculous and illogical debate will no doubt continue for many years to come. It’s an argument that’s largely about opinions, and has very little to do with fact or reality. We will skip the debate…

One very straightforward and practical way to look at all this is as follows: subject to the applicable state and federal laws, you may want to consider every possible legal option to help you defend yourself, and your family against violent attackers. As long as there are guns, and other deadly weapons that criminals can use against you, and your family, why would you ever choose to put yourself at any sort of disadvantage? While there are many people who will vehemently disagree with this logic, you alone are responsible for the health and welfare of your family, and you should take that responsibility very seriously. The day may come when whatever preparations you have made for self-defense, will be the only thing standing between you and an armed attacker(s). The opinions of the misinformed and the ill advised will do you little good, and will bring you little comfort the day you find yourself staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.
