Most consumer goods are delivered either from a point of production (factory or farm) in the case of larger or expedited shipments or more typically through one or more points of storage (that is, manufacturer, wholesaler/distributor, or retail warehouses) to a point of sale (that is, retail store), where the consumer buys the good to consume there or to take home.

There are many variations on this model for specific types of goods and modes of sale. Products sold via catalog or the Internet may be delivered directly from the manufacturer or field warehouse to the consumer’s home. In some cases, manufacturers may have factory outlets that serve as both a warehouse and a retail store.

While all processes in the supply chain in general, and order management specifically, are subject to measurement (covered later in the text), this is where the “rubber meets the road,” so to speak, and is probably one of the most critical points for success or failure in the supply chain. This is due to the fact that delivery, which may be performed by a third party in many cases, is the last point of physical contact with the customer (except in the case of returns, covered in the next chapter).
