Taking the spades as weapons, the two boys crossed the moat and headed down the track towards the woods.

‘I wish we had some more weapons,’ Finlay said, looking at the bent spade he was carrying.

‘A bazooka would be good,’ Max gulped. The trees were looming up in front of them and the closer they got the more nervous he felt.

As they reached the woods they passed an old crumbling building that had once been part of the castle stables.

‘Do you reckon there might be anything we could use in here?’ Finlay said hopefully. They peered inside, but the building was empty apart from some sacks and a heap of old rope in a corner. ‘We could take the rope,’ Finlay said. ‘It might be useful, I guess.’

Max swung the coil of rope easily on to his shoulder. ‘So what are we going to do?’

‘It’s really quiet in here,’ Finlay said.

‘Yeah,’ Max agreed. ‘It’s like all the birds and animals have gone.’

Finlay swallowed. ‘Probably run away from this lion.’

‘Or been eaten,’ Max added. He could feel his hands sweating. What were they going to find?

They stopped at the brow of the hill.

Below them the woods stretched down into a clearing far below. Leaves and branches were scattered across the ground of the clearing and bushes on either side looked as if they had been heavily trampled.

‘It was probably just the storm last night,’ Finlay said, trying to sound brave. ‘it…’
