Tears were streaming down my cheeks.

There I was in just my white socks,

and boxer shorts. I had to walk many blocks,

in the dead of winter, freezing

as I am now

in this prison cell.

When I finally arrived home, soggy feet,

and fatigued from trudging through the city snow-

I didn’t even say a word.

I didn’t speak to anyone.

My best friend, dead because of me.

I was too worried about materialistic value

and being seen as something special to the world.

Too worried

about being called poor. Too worried about my ego.
