We must exercise care in our evaluations. A few years ago, I realized the physical impossibility of accomplishing everything I believed God wanted me to do: run my website and blog, write this book, assist FJ in his writing, and do legacy work for our grandchildren. Then I read David Plattâs book called Radical and realized my focus needs to be on God. Platt reminded me our greatest need is to seek God, asking Him to accomplish through us what we canât do in our strength. These thoughts gave rise to this prayer: âO Lord, You do have a purpose for my life. Even if itâs only as a presence in my family membersâ lives. If I werenât here, they would be missing the love, prayers, and teaching that I can give.â And so, I recognized Godâs primary purpose for me at this time is to love and be present for my family.
My Purposes Found
Four purposes emerge as important focal points in my life: praying, especially interceding for others; writing this book (and when itâs finished, promoting my website); seeking ways to encourage others; and organizing legacy work. However, legacy activities are now a lower priority because of decreasing strength. Of course, other important concerns exist, such as FJ, housework, and family time. But it seems to me God has given me these four areas of significant interest on which to concentrate.
As a rule, I have lived my life and carried out my purposes with enthusiasm. Such excitement derives from God enabling me to exist, but even more, to overcome and thrive. Yet, that sense of adventure has dulled. So, I sought, and found, the problem: my purposes had become un-balanced, spending too much time on writing and too little on people. As I could see no way out at the moment, I kept trudging on. When commitments are fulfilled, I plan to focus on family, friends, and legacy work, while husbanding my strength. Writing is still ahead but I will limit my time and energy.
Acceptance and finding new purpose are easier to achieve when life is seen as a gift. Philip Yanceyâs quote from a cancer patient sums it up well. âI do not consider myself dying of cancer but living despite it. I do not look upon each day as another day closer to death, but as another day of life, to be appreciated and enjoyed.â5 Any invisibly disabled person can echo these thoughts.
