Heart bypass surgery and angioplasty are insufficient solutions to heart disease because they don’t remedy the most dangerous plaque blocking the patient’s arteries. Nor do these procedures address the underlying cause of disease.

Analysis

Surgeries pose many risks to patients and often fail to address the underlying cause of their heart conditions. Of most concern, perhaps, is the fact that these procedures are not intended to educate the patient on how to protect heart health through diet and lifestyle changes in the future.

A 2008 study showed that 94 percent of bypass patients will need repeated interventions over a 30-year period following the initial surgery. [15] While new surgical technologies are improving those outcomes, the underlying reasons why people need bypass surgery in the first place are not addressed in the operating room. A 2010 study that continues to be cited in medical literature showed that the risk of heart disease declines in populations with higher education levels. [16] The researchers on these studies concluded that, in part, these improved outcomes might be due to the fact that these people tend to be better informed and seek better education about healthier behaviors. [17]
