Prizes for Teens
As previous chapters have mentioned, there are compelling arguments on both sides of the question of whether summer reading programs should award prizes. Assuming you have chosen to reward your teen participants with either tangible or experiential prizes, this section provides suggestions of age-appropriate rewards in both categories.
Tangible Prizes for Teens
As long as the rewards suit their interests and maturity level, teens can be satisfied with a wide variety of tangible prizes, both large and small. Teens typically have a better understanding than their younger counterparts of the fact that they may not win a raffle. Therefore, you can usually raffle off big-ticket items for this age group without worrying about hurt feelings. Teens will be disappointed when they do not win, but in general they do not have their hearts set on beating the odds and being the one to take home a new bike, game system, e-reader, and so on. They have the maturity to understand the chances of winning and to lose gracefully.
Some teens are motivated by the possibility of winning a book at the end of the summer reading program. This is generally not a great way to reward teens who were reluctant about reading in the first place, but it can be the perfect way to acknowledge the hard work of teens who enjoy reading. If you do not have the funding in your budget to purchase a brand-new book for every teen, considering using advance reader copies you pick up at conferences as prizes. Teen readers love the opportunity to read new titles by their favorite authors before they are published.
Other tangible prizes that appeal to teens include
