THIRTEEN

Even with a top-of-the-line security system, Cobie hadn’t been able to fall asleep until the early hours of the morning. She kept seeing that face in her window. How could she ever get it out of her mind? The face—a man in his midthirties—had appeared as surprised to see her open the curtains and look out as she had been to see him. Had he believed he could simply climb through her window with her and Adam on the other side of the house?

What was so important? What did someone think she had? And why the attempts on her life if they were only looking for something?

After the police, Tom and then Adam finally left her alone, she should have felt safe in her home. The system was armed. No one could get inside without her knowing. But still she felt on edge. So what if her house had a security system? She couldn’t stay inside forever, and she wasn’t safe outside—even on some remote island. This had to stop.

Since it had been too late last night to call the state archaeologist, she’d found his email on the website easily enough and sent him a message. Now, to see if he’d answered. Cobie tossed the covers off. Might as well make some coffee and get going. The sooner she found answers, the better. Correction, the sooner she and Adam found answers. She’d promised him she would include him, and so she would. It was foolish to do this alone. She would let the police know about what she found, too. They needed all the help they could get. But just like Chief Winters had explained to her last night, the police couldn’t be everywhere all the time, and no one could know more about what was going on than she could. She had the feeling he thought she was keeping something from him, that she knew what this was all about.

God, why is someone trying to kill me? What do I have that they want?

While the coffee brewed, she booted up the laptop, hoping for an email from Miles Cooper, the state archaeologist. It was a long shot, but her father would likely have known the man, and hopefully he would recognize her name.

Coffee mug in hand, she drank in the strong brew. Mmm. Just right. That should get her going this morning. She opened up her email and scanned down the page.

Bingo. Miles Cooper had replied.

Her palms grew clammy. She sat down to open the email and read. He expressed his sympathy and condolences for her loss and understood her need to visit the site where her father had worked and visit the salvage vessel—the Voyager. He promised to contact Deep Water Marine Salvage to look into getting her on the vessel, though he could make no promises. He’d been the one to sign off on the attempts to retrieve the gold, but he had only done so through pressure from government officials, meaning he had some pull with the salvage company.
