Chapter Nine

Although she was still miffed with the sheriff, Georgina was happy to see him arrive that afternoon while Addie was napping. Stuart ushered him into the parlor now that they had furniture in the room. Buster joined them. If not for the frightening threat on the barn, she would have enjoyed being able to entertain a guest—even the sheriff—in her home.

Quickly she started fresh coffee. While it was boiling, she whipped cream. Then, she dished up bowls of the peach cobbler and topped them with the cream. Enough was left for Addie to have a small bowl when she woke.

“Gentlemen, a bowl of peach cobbler with whipped cream is ready for you in the kitchen.”

The men didn’t have to be called twice. They sat and dug into the dessert. She gave Scout breakfast leftovers she’d saved for him.

Stuart swallowed and looked at Claud. “You have any ideas?”

Claud shook his head. “Nothing.” He set his spoon in the bowl and patted his pocket. “Oh, but the telegraph operator asked me to give you this. Came right after you left town.”

Georgina experienced a sense of dread settle over her. No reason. Perhaps someone wanted to buy some of Stuart’s cattle. She couldn’t say why her head suddenly pounded and she couldn’t get a deep breath.

Stuart reached for the telegram.

Claud shook his head. “Not for you. It’s for your wife.”

“For me?” Georgina knew it would be bad news. She just knew without a doubt.

She accepted the envelope with shaking fingers. Tentatively, she opened the folded sheet of paper.
