chapter twelve

“Hey,” Andy said to me later that morning, nudging me in the back with her arm.

Startled, I spun around, slamming my locker closed.

“Oh, hi,” I said as casually as possible, heart thudding in nervousness. I’d been starting to think she was going to ignore me forever.

“I got your e-mail,” she said. “Thanks.”

I nodded slowly, relief seeping through my limbs. It seemed we were making up, finally.

“Well, I feel bad things are so awful between us.” I fixed my eyes on the hallway’s speckled white tile floor. “I’m really sorry about what I did, Andy. I didn’t mean to piss you off so badly.” I glanced up at her.

“It’s okay.” She shrugged, giving a half smile. “Anyway, Tyler’s busy during lunch. Maybe we can sit together and catch up.”

Not the friendliest offer in the world, but at this point, I’d take it. “Sure.”

We headed to health class together, carrying our stuff.

“You ready for our quiz?” I asked.

Andy nodded, twiddling a strand of hair with her free hand.

“It took me forever to get through that last chapter. It was massive, and so gross.” I shuddered. “Those STD photos are nasty. So, what did you think about it?”

“Hmm? Oh, yeah, definitely a hard one to read.” Andy glanced away and stepped into the classroom.

I got the distinct feeling she hadn’t read the material. I parked myself in the seat beside her, then leaned over. “You sure you’re all ready? Did you study last night?”

She pursed her lips. “Of course. Everything’s fine.”

Yup. She was so lying.

Andy is quite possibly the worst liar in the world, other than me. If they wrote a book on how to tell if someone is lying, it could be filled with the two of us. Andy always twitches her eyes funny and purses her lips in the same way when she’s telling a big fat whopper.

I don’t know what my giveaway tics are, but I’m sure I have them too.

I shook my head. “Okay, then.” If she wasn’t up for talking about it, I guess I wasn’t going to force the issue.

Besides, if Tyler was at the root of the problem, I could see why she was hesitant to talk to me. I bet she’d spent every waking moment with him since our fight and hadn’t studied at all. That was so not like her.

My stomach sank. This wouldn’t have happened if I’d insisted we study together, like we normally do.

Or if I hadn’t matched her with “babe” in the first place.

The quiz went by fast. Well, at least for me. Luckily, I’d squeezed in some study time in between staring at Derek under my eyelashes in the library.

As I wrote my answers, I kept sneaking peeks at Andy, watching her struggle. A part of me was tempted to help her, but I knew better. My luck, I’d get busted and thrown out of school for cheating.

The class bell rang. It was time to eat, thank God.
