“Well, most of his past girlfriends were black,” Anika replied and turned to Mariana, “including this one.”

Stephanie and Christy stared at Mariana, who was still in a daze. “You dated Scott?”

“A long time ago,” Mariana waved a hand in the air, “we weren’t together long.”

“So what happened if you mind me asking?” Christy asked. “it seems he still has a lot of love for you. He certainly wasn’t serenading us.”

“He was stupid and so was I,” Mariana admitted, as the feelings she had for Scott hit her like a sharp punch in the gut, “but things are better now. We get along better.”

“Well, maybe, you two could be seeing each other again.” Anika replied. “I don’t see why you two can’t give it another shot?”

“HR would be all over her,” Stephanie rolled her eyes, “I don’t see HR being okay with it.”

“We’ll be fine as long as it’s not obvious Scott isn’t abusing his position to give Mariana more projects over others.” Christy interjected, “on the flip side, we also need to be sure he isn’t punishing Mariana by giving others more projects she was qualified for.”

“Damn.” Stephanie’s eyes widened. “Maybe dating Scott wouldn’t be a good idea, after all. Seeing him at work and then seeing him at home? I don’t know if I would be able to handle it.”

Mariana softly bit her lip and remained silent. She wondered that herself.
