As seemed to always be the case, opinions were split on Bruce and the perspective he was putting forward.

Dan Inosanto, still having only just met Bruce, remembers the polarized atmosphere in the crowd. “There was a high percentage of people who were just in awe of him,” he explains, “but then there is another group who was just really upset.”

Clarence Lee, a longtime and well-respected karate teacher from San Francisco, had been a judge during the competitions earlier in the day, and he remembers that Bruce’s attitude and his demonstration didn’t sit so well with many of the martial artists in attendance: “Guys were practically lining up to fight Bruce Lee after his performance at Long Beach.”

For others, though, like Scollan and Bustillo, Bruce’s viewpoint resonated in a profound way. Months earlier Scollan had gotten into a street fight only to find himself hamstrung by his own horse stance, unable to evade the blows of his opponent and dumbstruck as to why the art of karate wasn’t proving superior. So while some martial artists at Long Beach were offended by Bruce’s criticism of the horse stance, practitioners such as Scollan saw it as a revelation, an assessment that addressed what he had experienced in a real-world fight situation.

“Bruce made a number of enemies that night,” says Scollan, “as well as a number of followers.”
