AFTER TOSSING THE FOOTBALL with Jordan, Kara made him his favorite meal: macaroni and cheese. Or maybe she was just putting it in the microwave. The memory had dimmed over the years. But at that moment, there was no sense of urgency, no panic.

Her brother called. “Are you watching the weather?” Dustin asked. Kara and her mother spoke every day, but it was only recently that Dustin had started to call her out of the blue. “We had become more like friends,” Dustin explained. She assured him she would keep an eye on it.

Her mother called minutes later. She had been planning to drive to Bridge Creek to watch her grandson play T-ball. “I asked her if Jordan’s game had been cancelled. She said yeah, actually she said, ‘Yes, mother.’” Mary laughed remembering Kara’s exasperated inflection.
