Embrace the Hive Mind
You may struggle to adjust your behaviors around success and failure, and let go of responsibility. Forming new habits isn’t easy, and these are no exception.
As we close out this chapter, I want to provide you with a deceptively small change in how you speak to the team. This change can help you reinforce the behaviors above, and the relationship you are working to build with your team.
I’m not what you would call a die-hard Sci-Fi fan. I have, however, read and watched enough of the genre to have seen a common theme emerge.
In any Sci-fi adventure where we have our heroes facing off against an alien insect-like race, there is usually some concept of a hive mind. It doubles as a repository of knowledge and means of communication.
Whenever we’re exposed to some translation of the language, one thing stands out: The bugs don’t think or speak in terms of the individual.
They say “we” and “us,” not “you” and “I.”
Say what you want about bugs, I don’t care for them myself, but they are on to something here.
As the team’s leader, you have a responsibility to shape the team into a highly functional unit. Building trust, respect, and influence built on a shared understanding and treatment of success and failure will take you a long way.
Sometimes, however, it’s the little things that really work to reinforce our more significant behaviors. Little things like the choice of language that we use when speaking to and about the team.
Speaking in terms of “we” and “us” makes it clear by the words you use that you consider yourself a part of the team. Not above or beyond them, but an essential member of the unit as a whole.
This reinforces that the team will share the benefits of successful achievements, and also shares responsibility for failures.
How we speak influences how we think, and vice versa. Be intentional about the language you use and the effect those language choices can have on the longer-term development of your team and relationships.
Inclusive, versus exclusive. Together, instead of isolated.
Reinforce a shared sense of purpose that encourages the team to strengthen their bond and work better together. It moves them, and you closer to acting as a unit, instead of a loosely affiliated group of individuals.
