Skin

Dermatology, the branch of medicine concerned with conditions that affect the skin, is a rather broad topic. Diagnosis and treatment of most rashes would be, as they say, beyond the scope of this book.

In the section that follows we will focus on identification of skin conditions that require medical attention quickly because early treatment may be important.

As a general rule, it is important to note that any rash that is accompanied by the following symptoms or signs should receive prompt medical attention:

• High fever

• Significant pain or swelling of the area affected by the rash

• Difficulty breathing

• Feeling particularly ill or weak

• A rash that begins shortly after taking a medication, eating, or an insect sting (in the case of a sting, a concerning rash means a rash other than localized redness at the site of the bite)
