Principle 7: Get a Doctor Who Gets It

This seventh principle and the previous six are united by a “meta” principle: the principle of sovereignty. You are in charge of your health. Your metabolism. Your diet and fitness. Your life span. And the quality of life you experience for however long yours lasts. That means your health is not the government’s responsibility. Not food manufacturers’, farmers’, or ranchers’. Pharmaceutical companies are not sovereign over your health, either. Not even your own doctor is. In many cases, these organizations and individuals offer “advice” that only worsens your health. And they are not accountable to you, either. They lose nothing if you die younger and with a lower quality of life than you could have in the way you and your loved ones lose. So again, you and only you are in position to improve your health because you and only you are in charge of it.

Does that mean becoming your own doctor? No. If you buy a car, it’s your car. That doesn’t imply you should become an auto mechanic. That does mean you, a responsible owner, will take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop when it’s time. Similarly, if you’re going to take your metabolic health seriously, you need to work with healthcare practitioners who “get it.” If your doctor doesn’t recognize the supremacy of metabolic health over all else, they may continue pushing unhelpful suggestions on you or even try to sabotage your efforts out of misguided care.

How strongly can you push back if your doctor looks at you and says, “Everything you’re trying is garbage, you just need to take your medication”? Maybe you can resist that the first time, and even the tenth, but eventually, if you get frustrated, will you give in and take the medications instead of doing the work? Even if you don’t, that will be an uphill battle to be taken seriously. It’s difficult to work with a doctor who’s laughing at your efforts.

And I don’t just mean picking your personal family doctor. Make sure the specialists you work with respect what you’re trying to do. Your health journey will be so much easier if the experts near you offer advice centered around these principles. A doctor or specialist who points out helpful metabolic health principles and keeps you accountable for them with appropriate tests will be invaluable in your personal growth.

Unfortunately, finding these sorts of doctors and specialists can be challenging. There’s not any one specialty or type of medicine that guarantees everyone there will understand metabolic health. Although all physicians deal with the consequences of poor metabolic health, few understand it, because we’re taught wrong information based on a compromised medical system controlled by the Big Food industry. Even those who understand a few of the concepts might not be truly onboard with the full practice. Just because someone recommends you take vitamin C and turmeric for inflammation doesn’t mean they understand how to reverse the inflammation permanently through diet.
