14 Stone Cold Shakespeare

The Welbeck portrait of Edward de Vere, a seventeenth-century copy of a picture, now lost to history, painted in Paris circa 1575. This portrait, artist unknown, is on long-term loan from Welbeck Abbey to London’s National Portrait Gallery.

Mark Twain, bedazzled by the poverty of facts surrounding the playwright’s life, dubbed Shakespeare “the Great Unknown” and compared him to a museum brontosaurus made from too much plaster and too few bones. In search of some unassailable facts, I turned to Professor Stanley Wells’s essay “What Was He Really Like?”
