Chapter Eighteen

“So, when did you come up with the idea of holding a soiree?” Daniel asked as he extinguished the lamp and climbed into bed. Abigail snuggled up closer to him, resting her head on his chest. She didn’t answer until his arm was around her.

“About a second before you walked into the drawing room,” she said around a yawn. “It occurred to me we could waste weeks or months chasing after Bickmore. How much better if the bee came to the honey instead?”

There was silence in the darkened room, the ceiling dimly lit by the low fire in the grate. Abigail listened to her husband breathe, the rise and fall of his chest under her cheek. No doubt he was considering her words, reviewing them to see if the intuitive logic of her idea could withstand rigorous scrutiny.

She wondered if Daniel needed more convincing.

“That jumped-up little sailor destroyed our Charteris House. The things we’ve lost… and seeing Bassett in tears over the loss of his beloved clocks. I shan’t have it! Bickmore took us by surprise once. I won’t let him do it again.”

Daniel soothed her with a stroke of her hair. “There’s no doubt it’s as much personal as it is political for Bickmore. His hatred for Adam is without question,” he said.

“Yes. All the better to lure the man out – we want him well out of the way before O’Brien returns with his news.”

Daniel turned on his side. Abigail could just see his face. “And you’re happy to potentially put Olivia at risk? If you’re going to make it a full party, then you’ll have to account for Nate and Susannah, Peggy and Clem as well.”

Abigail shrugged, unconcerned, “They’re all grown-ups. They know the risks. And they’ll be prepared.”

“Alexandra, too? Is she one of your ‘league’ already?”

“She’s a sharp one. I trust her to look after herself – and to keep her mouth shut.”

“After only a day?” he frowned.

“I have good instincts about people and, besides, she’s family…”

From his expression, Abigail knew Daniel was not prepared to accept her explanation at face value.

“What else aren’t you telling me?”

She gave him her most coquettish expression and ran a finger down the center of his chest. Daniel growled, pulling her into his arms and holding her still there. After so many years, they knew each other so well.

“I’ve given Alexandra an incentive. She has a tendre for David Manston. If memory serves me, he has somewhat of a scandalous past, but I can’t remember the particulars. I’ll find out soon enough though. You know I always like to be aware of who owes whom.”

There was silence again.

“You don’t think I’ve overstepped, do you?”

The arms that held her tightly loosened and his hand rubbed circles on her back. Abigail snuggled up to her husband and her lips touched his chest through the opening of his night shirt.

“I can see how this plan could work,” he admitted. “But if you only wanted to help your distant relations, you didn’t have to go to this extent.
