PENNY’S STORY

When Penny started labouring at 2am, a week before her due date, she was sure she would see her baby shortly. She woke her partner Tony, as she had been told that second labours and births are faster than the first. She was keen to get her mother to come and look after their son, Declan, so they could go to the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital, they went straight to the birth unit, as suggested on the prenatal orientation tour. The midwife at the front desk looked up from the computer screen, scowled, and as she returned her gaze to the computer, asked grumpily ‘Did you ring to say you were coming?’ Penny said she had rung. She let the midwife know that this was her second baby and she didn’t think it would be long. Without looking at Penny and Tony, the midwife pointed to the waiting room halfway down the corridor and told Penny and Tony to wait there for a midwife to see them. Penny glanced at Tony as they walked down to the waiting room.
