The Grace of Being an Interim: Yarnell, Arizona

A few months after I had completed my work as an interim in the First Presbyterian Church of Chandler, I received a letter from the session of the Community Presbyterian Church in Yarnell, Arizona, inviting me to consider being their interim pastor.

This congregation was located in the mountains sixty-five miles north west from Sun City. The altitude was five thousand seven hundred feet. This indicated that this community was above the intense heat of the desert. People moved here not only to escape the intense heat but to enjoy the four seasons of the year.

When I accepted the challenge of being their interim pastor, the ministerial relation committee of the presbytery informed me that if this church desired, I would be able to stay longer than nine months, which is the norm for an interim pastor.

My friends in Sun City asked, “Do you have any definite plans for this mountain church?” I responded, “Yes. It is outlined in Acts 2:42,47”:

To increase their devotion to Jesus.

To increase the depth of their fellowship.

Pray that the Lord would add to their number.
