Chapter 5

NYOKA

As Nyoka suspected, Judith had stirred up trouble. The brunette’s father was the VP of the human resource department and pandered to her whims.

Nyoka’s first contact with the HR manager was unsettling. The blonde went quickly to the point, stating that Nyoka violated her contract and she had proof. Nyoka hadn’t contested the accusation. She asked the petite woman, “Why am I here? It seems you got everything needed to make a case, without my input.”

The woman avoided her eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m just following procedure.”

“Hmmm.” Nyoka got to her feet, struggling to be pleasant. “I’m sure you’ll contact me again shortly.”

The manager’s eyes brimmed with sympathy, but she didn’t say another word.

A few days later, the HR manager summoned Nyoka to advise that she was suspended for a week without pay.

As she left the building, Judith happened to be in the lobby. “Let’s see if you make it back,” she said.

Her hazel eyes shone with malice, but Nyoka tipped her chin up and kept walking. The weird thing was, the experience hadn’t fazed her. Instead, it gave her time to think about whether she could deal with the stress of working in a toxic environment.

A day later, Nyoka’s thoughts were in disarray. She liked being relaxed for her treatment, but that didn’t feel possible.

She gave herself a pep talk, then focused on her book. In no time, the dialysis was complete. She couldn’t get home fast enough and was outside Aunt Gem’s home twenty minutes after treatment.

The stocky grandmother of two opened the door seconds after Nyoka rang the doorbell and stepped back to let her inside wearing her usual warm smile. “Come in, dear. Gabrielle’s watching television.”

Nyoka laughed as she walked into the living room. “She’s going to be an addict soon if we’re not careful.”

At the sound of Nyoka’s voice, Gabrielle let out a gurgle and got off the floor, holding on to the front of the sofa. Hands held out, she staggered toward Nyoka, who scooped her up and kissed her forehead.

Her skin was the same milk chocolate shade as Nyoka’s, and her plump little lips and dark eyes reflected her mother. Gaby’s father shone through in her bubbly personality and full head of wavy hair.

Nyoka squeezed the toddler to her chest and blew on her neck, which made her giggle. Holding her away, Nyoka cooed. “How’s Mommy’s baby? Huh? How’s Gaby?”

Gaby showed her four teeth in a wide grin. “Mama.”

Nyoka hugged her again, inhaling the familiar baby powder scent. “Are you ready to go home?”

Gaby made a sound Nyoka took to be agreement.

Dropping kisses on Gaby’s cheek, Nyoka walked around the sofa. She set her daughter down, gathered her toys, and dropped them into a basket Aunt Gem kept in one corner.

“You don’t have to tidy up,” Aunt Gem said. “It’s fine.”

“It’s no trouble. I’d feel awful if I left you to clean up after us.”

Aunt Gem gave Nyoka the diaper bag. “It’s not a bother, dear, you know I love having Gaby over.”

“Oh, yes, I can tell by the fact that she’s heavier each time I come to take her home.
