Kristen’s Story

Kristen explained her journey with aphasia to therapists at Northwestern’s Asphasia and Neurolinguistics Research Laboratory. It began when she experienced a stroke at age thirty-one. She was working as a physical therapist and engaged to be married. Suddenly, everything disappeared. She couldn’t talk at all for two weeks. When she uttered her first word, it was “guacamole.” Kristen entered a language therapy program. For the next three years, she met with therapists twice a week. Slowly, she regained the ability to speak. But five years later, she still speaks in short, planned sentences.d
