Eight

It’s just a date between friends.

Cameron growled in frustration as she tossed another pair of slacks onto the growing pile of clothes that lay on her bed. She reached into the closet for her last pair of pants. How could she have outgrown every item she owned overnight? It wasn’t like people had growth spurts at this point in life.

She surveyed the wreckage and wondered if she wasn’t being a tad bit picky. She was going out with Seth, after all. She liked him a lot and wanted to make a good impression. But at the same time, she hadn’t dated in years and wasn’t sure now was a good time to start.

The thought was punctuated by the ever-present queasiness that rolled over her. She took a few deep breaths to ward it off. It would be fine. She would be fine. She liked Seth. He liked her. They were friends. So if he was more friend than date—the outing was no big deal.

Therefore, the clothing issue had nothing to do with the newness of the dating situation. It had nothing to do with Seth. He always made her feel comfortable in his presence. If it wasn’t a case of not finding the right outfit for the “date,” then what was it?

Her nerves frayed some more.

“Okay, Cameron. Let’s go through this one more time.” She looked forward to the outing, she couldn’t wait to spend some time alone in Seth’s company. The only times she’d seen him over the past couple of weeks, they’d either been at meals with multiple people present, they’d been helping with the youth, or they’d been helping Ginny or Eloise with one thing or another. Until today. She wasn’t nervous about the date. She wasn’t being picky about her outfits, finding fault out of nerves.

She slipped into her last pair of black pants. No deal. They wouldn’t button. This was ridiculous! None of the slacks fit quite right. They all had waist issues. Why hadn’t she noticed this before? She thought for a moment. She always wore scrubs or yoga pants at work under her lab jacket. She liked to be comfortable, and with births taking their sweet time for the most part, the job required a lot of sitting around and waiting. When she came home she crawled into her comfort clothes and settled in for the night.

Ever since Ginny’s accident, she and Ginny had taken to eating dinner in their suite while watching old movies. It was easier for Ginny to eat from a tray at the sitting-room couch than to sit at the table with guests. They never could figure out how to prop her leg up in a way that would allow her to be comfortable without taking up chair space. Cameron didn’t want her friend eating alone, so she joined her. Besides, after a day of talking to patients and coworkers, Cameron preferred the intimacy of a quiet dinner in their suite.

The only downside to the situation was lost time in Seth’s company.
