A few hours later, Mr and Mrs Spratley stood listening with sceptical expressions and folded arms as the Prime Minister outlined his plan. Or rather, his plans. He seemed very keen to point out that he had two, and that they were both, apparently, corkers.

It was a fine day in Hyde Park. The members of the crowd who had not been frightened away by the appearance of the purple lizard-creature had stuck around to see what would happen next and lay dotted around, sleeping under their coats, like travellers delayed overnight at an airport. The sudden whir of approaching helicopter blades made them peer into the sky curiously.

The Prime Minister led the Spratleys over to the stage, where an elderly gentleman with a fierce moustache was hunched over a vast and complex bank of computer equipment. Wires, leads and cables of every variety sprouted from the equipment and fed into the laptop computer that Admiral Skink had used to program the non-omega-wave-projecting omega wave projector.

‘Allow me to introduce my father,’ said the Prime Minister, tapping the elderly man on the shoulder.

Mr Pocket straightened up, moustache bristling, and shook hands heartily with Mr and Mrs Spratley. ‘Christopher Pocket,’ he growled. ‘Pocket Technology. Pleased to meet you.’
