Chapter 11:

Space wars

When we got home from the trip, Danny still wasn’t speaking to me. I think Dad and Rushani had hoped the trip would make us more friendly, but it had done exactly the opposite.

It’s awkward sharing a bedroom with somebody who totally ignores you. Danny acted as if he was the only person in the room, or rather in his corner of it. He had a sort of invisible line around his bed and his belongings. If any of my things crossed that line, he kicked them back onto my side.

This annoyed me. When he wasn’t there, I crossed the invisible line and messed up a few of his things. Nothing too mean – I didn’t damage anything. I just put his DVDs in the wrong cases and his books in different boxes, stuff like that. He was a very tidy person, unlike me, and he soon noticed.

He couldn’t ask me if I’d done it because he wasn’t talking to me. But when everyone was there, he said, “Somebody’s been messing about with my books and DVDs. Who was it?”

“Not me,” said Sophie.

“Why would I touch your stupid DVDs?” asked Ben.

I said, “It was probably Will.”

“I never!” said Will. “But somebody broke my Lego house. When I find out who did it I’ll kill them!”

This made me laugh. He was only 4, after all. But even little kids can be quite dangerous if they want to be.

Things a 4-year-old could do to a full-grown man:

– Run out in front of his car and cause a crash.

– Make him read Thomas the Tank Engine 10,000 times.

– Leave toys at top of stairs for him to trip over.

– Wake him up at least three times every night (make that 13 times on the night before a birthday).

– Refuse to eat anything except Coco Pops, then (when the cupboard is full of Coco Pops) change over to Frosted Shreddies.

– Nick his lighter and try to set his wellies on fire.

– Swop his blood pressure pills for Smarties.

– Find where he hid a box of posh chocolates, take bites out of most of them and put them back.

– Eat his winning lottery ticket.

– Run along a crowded street, screaming, “That man’s trying to make me get in his car!”

Will had actually tried a couple of these on Dad. The box of chocolates had been meant as a present for Rushani, but Dad had to throw it away. The wellies, luckily, didn’t catch fire – the rubber just melted a bit and gave off a horrible smell. The lottery ticket was only worth £10, but even if it had been worth £10 million, Dad wouldn’t have done much. He would have let Rushani tell Will off because Will was Rushani’s son, not his.

Using this system, Dad told me off for not getting on better with Danny. (I guessed Rushani was having the same conversation with Danny about me.) I tried to explain that it wasn’t really my fault.

“I did say sorry, but he wouldn’t listen.
