The Pyramids were a five-piece surf band from Long Beach known for their hit surf instrumental “Penetration.” The record’s success led them to appear on several television dance programs, such as the Lloyd Thaxton Show, American Bandstand, Shebang, and Hullabaloo. They were one of the few surf bands to appear in a theatrical motion picture, the 1964 film Bikini Beach, starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Here, the band performs at the California National Guard Armory in Riverside. The band members are, from left to right, Will Glover, Ron McMullen, Tom Pitman, Steve Leonard, and Skip Mercier. Note the Beatles wigs on the floor. As a gimmick, the band members would shake them off at the start of a show to reveal shaved heads.
