THE REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN: A WORKERS’ REPUBLIC

Late in March 1839 William Edwards — Mad Edwards the Baker as he became known from the violence of his language — took Henry Vincent on a tour of the Blackwood district, stronghold of the most militant of the colliers. A band of about 100 young girls accompanied them into Blackwood itself; ‘Here’s a health to the Radical boys, May tyranny fail, and freedom prevail’, went the refrain of their song. Vincent was mightily impressed by all he saw and heard. ‘The scenery is very picturesque’, he wrote in his journal;

Fine fertile hills rising in all directions. I could not help thinking of the defensible nature of the country in the case of foreign invasion! A few thousands of armed men on the hills could successfully defend them. Wales would make an excellent Republic.1
