Participant ambivalence about the use of power

The presence of worker power, which the analysis revealed, was also recognized by the participants within this project and in their experiences of other activist practice contexts. In other words, even if activist workers wish to suppress the articulation of the power they use, it does not necessarily go unrecognized by those subject to it. One participant pointed out in a discussion with me outside the project meetings that:

I think social workers saying, ‘I’m giving you all the power’ is bullshit, because you know you’re going to them for a reason so why give up everything? There is obviously a reason you’re going to them, you’re going to them for their knowledge or something.
