Chapter 6:

Advanced Social Wealth Strategies

“First, you have to be visible in the community. You have to get out there and connect with people. It’s not called net-sitting or net-eating. It’s called networking. You have work at it.”

– Dr. Ivan Misner

Remember what I said in the beginning of this book about groups? Becoming a part of a group allows you to meet more people, experience more, learn more about yourself and others, and create mutually supportive relationships. I’m talking about the hugely important concept of building your social capital that we covered earlier. I want to discuss in this chapter how you can meet more people, while creating your social capital and/or leveraging it to help you.

As I mentioned before, there are great places to meet people and not-so-great places. I wanted to address a major reason why that is. A lot of people who are out and about in settings such as bars, clubs, and restaurants aren’t there to be social. They are out to spend time with their friends, talk about a work situation, discuss some personal drama, and so forth. Those individuals are not interested in meeting you, and no matter what you do or say, your chances of having a conversation are pretty low.

Next, many men and women suffer from social anxiety; they’re uncomfortable approaching someone, they don’t know what to say or how to interact. Yet they keep going into the toughest situations: bars, clubs, restaurants, high-end hotels, and the like. In these environments, it’s impossible to break the bad habits that are pushing them further down their rabbit hole of despair.

I’ll say it one more time: Social skills are learned behaviors. This is huge! Anyone can learn to be great at approaching and speaking to others. It takes practice, along with the right mindset and other tools. If you don’t go out and practice, you won’t get any better. If you want a different result, you’ve got to change your thoughts, behaviors, and actions.

So go to lower-stress and easier environments to practice and feel more comfortable, where you can create more successful interactions and build your confidence, along with the evidence that you can do it. Through this process you will become much better at speaking to anyone—anywhere—because you will have gained some level of mastery and have much more confidence than you had before, along with just being more comfortable approaching and speaking with people.

You can keep trying it the hard way and stay stuck in your same frustrating social patterns, or you can try something different and create new, more effective interactions. Engage with people everywhere you go, and practice with anyone, anytime, anywhere. If I am at Whole Foods, I’ll say hi to other people shopping and just make quick small talk. I use whatever environment I am in to practice. I also speak with cashiers, baristas, store owners, chefs, waiters, valets, etc. This really helped me gain mastery over my social and communication skills quickly because I just didn’t do it every once in a while or on the weekends.
