Once children reach adolescence, social media has become a key component of adolescent communication and social development. Many adolescents consider social media is essential to building and maintaining social ties (Anderson & Jiang, 2018; Tartari, 2015).

Adolescent Social Media Use Support, Bullying, and Family Interaction

Most adolescents in developed countries use some form of social media, with approximately 85% using multiple platforms (e.g., Instagram, TikTok, Facebook; Anderson & Jiang, 2018). It has been found that the use of social media by adolescents is considered a cost-effective form of communication. As social media sites, like Facebook and Instagram, use on mobile platforms can be included as free in many mobile plans, adolescents have been utilising social media to engage with social networks rather than traditional calls or testing. Gaile described having many younger friends who could not afford a full plan and use social media, in this case, Facebook, to maintain contact:I have some young friends who are too poor to keep their phones working, so Facebook, it's just a bit of data. So we message through Messenger, where it's just data rather than a call. (Gaile)
