Completed in 1490.—Towards the end of the century, art in Florence takes on an upper middle-class, patrician character. On the whole it remains unconventional and preserves its earlier liberalism, but the generation to which its public belongs, the third of the century, represents an age group of wealthy heirs which attaches more importance to elegance and genteel appearance than to solidity and intellectual independence.
