They are all bands in which the drummer was the singer, either always (The Carpenters—Karen Carpenter), frequently, (The Eagles—Don Henley, the Band—Levon Helm, the Monkees—Mickey Dolenz), or occasionally (Kiss—Peter Criss, Queen—Roger Taylor, the Beatles—Ringo Starr [11 songs]). Dolenz sang lead on most of the Monkees’ biggest hits, including their “Last Train to Clarksville,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin Stone,” “I’m a Believer,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” as well as their theme song. The same is true of Helm, who sang lead on songs such as “Up on Cripple Creek,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Ophelia,” and “The Weight.”
Roger Taylor’s talents as a vocalist are understandably overshadowed by being in the same band as Freddie Mercury. However, Taylor had a four-octave voice and his extremely high falsetto was frequently used to great effect. Notable Queen songs on which Taylor’s vocals can be heard include “Keep Yourself Alive,” “Loser in the End,” “Tenement Funster,” “In the Lap of the Gods” (falsetto screams), “I’m In Love With My Car,” “’39” (high falsetto vocals during instrumental bridges) and “Bohemian Rhapsody” (high-falsetto vocals, such as the “let me go” lines and the final “for me … ” during midsection).
What do the following songs have in common?
“A Boy Named Sue” by Johnny Cash
“Bye-Bye Love” by Simon and Garfunkel
“Crossroads” by Cream
“Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash
“Give Peace a Chance” by John Lennon
“Memphis” by Johnny Rivers
“My Ding-a-Ling” by Chuck Berry
“No Woman No Cry” by Bob Marley
“Rock and Roll All Nite” by Kiss
“Thank God I’m a Country Boy” by John Denver
