Urban Employment

The migrant comes to the city seeking work; yet the city provides insufficient jobs. The comparatively striking growth of the manufacturing sector, in terms of its output, is not matched by the increase in wage-earning opportunities, for most of the new industries are capital- rather than labour-intensive. The increase in employment may tend to match the natural increase in the total population, but it falls behind the increase in the size of the cities consequent upon both natural increase and immigration. Again the number of new jobs created each year in the formal sector is considerably lower than the population of school-leavers – with or without their certifications of successful course completion. Contrary to some economic theories, the continued immigration does not depress wages to a point that the flow diminishes, for as we have seen other factors impel the migrant from the rural area. However, the increasing poverty of those not in the wage-earning sector may, in time, affect the migration rate.
