Chapter Seventeen

The dogs let Maddie sleep until seven and, feeling rested and cheerful upon waking, Maddie thought a special outing was in order. She called the boys to her and asked if they wanted to go to the beach. Bart, who would have gone to the beach three hundred sixty-five days a year if given the opportunity, danced in a little circle and barked. Then, as he raced to the door and back to Maddie, urging her to move faster, his toenails clicked on the floor, reminding her that he was overdue for a spa day. Goliath, swept up by Bart’s infectious mood, added his deep bark to the joyous cacophony as he loped to the door where Bart now stood, his entire body propelled by his wagging tail. Maddie grabbed their leashes and followed them out the door.

With all the fun of playing with other dogs, romping in the sand and frolicking in the water, the beach offered endless entertainment for Bart, and since it was just four blocks from Maddie’s house, she brought him as often as she could. Dogs technically weren’t allowed on the beach. They were supposed to go to one of the designated dog beaches farther south, but those were often crowded and dirty and not worth the time spent driving there or the hassle of parking. Early in the morning, the beach at the end of her street was empty by comparison, almost like a private beach. And since the lifeguards didn’t show up until nine, as long as Maddie and the other dog owners cleared out by then, there were usually no complaints about Rogers Park’s unofficial dog beach.

Their walk was brisk but pleasant. The rain the night before had offered welcome relief from the heat—Maddie guessed that the temperature had dropped by at least ten degrees. It would be even cooler by the lake, but the humidity hadn’t changed. That, and the gray clouds obstructing the sun, indicated that they were in for more rain in the coming days. For now, though, the day was almost perfect, and she planned to let the dogs enjoy it as much as possible.

As soon as their feet hit the sand, Maddie let Bart off his leash, adding another broken law to her growing list of transgressions that morning. He raced to join his best dog friends Simon, Ozzy and Lily as they romped in and out of the water. Though Goliath showed interest in the dog festivities before him, Maddie didn’t dare let him off leash. She didn’t trust him to come when called, nor did she relish the idea of chasing him all over the beach when it was time to go. For now, he’d have to settle for more restrained fun. So while Bart dashed in and out of the water chasing or being chased by his dog friends, Goliath hopped around, eager to romp with the other animals but limited in his play by being tethered to Maddie, not that she offered much resistance.
