Chapter Twelve

Work was a bit flat on Saturday. Or maybe it was just that I was a bit flat. “Do you think I’m a bit, well, flat?” I asked Diane, one of our regulars, when she came in for her usual camomile tea and carrot cake mid-afternoon.

She pursed her lips and looked at me sideways. Well, sideways and up as she’s about four foot nothing. “Hmm. You do look a bit peaky. I expect you’re missing your little friend,” she added sagely in her high-pitched, girly voice, her woolly grey-brown curls bobbing as she nodded. “Where’s she got to today?”

It was probably just as well Keisha wasn’t there to hear herself described as anyone’s little friend. “She’s over at Lesley’s today, helping out. But I’ll be seeing her tomorrow,” I added, in case Diane was worried. “I don’t think it’s that, anyway.” Although it was a shame I wouldn’t have anyone to ogle David and the other ninjas with. Then again, it seemed a bit weird ogling them now I actually knew them. Maybe I’d simply put the blinds down and have done with it.

“You know what you should do?” Diane said. “Get your hair done. That’s what I do when I’m a bit in the dumps. Get some highlights, or even just a really good blow dry. Or you know what?” she added with a cheeky grin. “You could always get something pierced.”

“Ew. So not into the pain thing,” I said with a little shudder. But she got me thinking.

I was so thinky I had four different customers call me on being all distracted that afternoon, but I still managed to let the pyjama party take me by surprise. I looked up from wiping down a table, and there they all were, David in the lead as usual. As I stood there, staring, his gaze caught mine, and he smiled. As if last night’s date had ended on a high, not a low so deep it was probably swimming in molten magma.

Then one of the kiddies at his heels tripped over, and David was on it in a flash, crouching down to check for grazed knees and brush the dust from the kiddie-size jim-jams. A small mouth wobbled. I was about to rush out and offer the magical healing powers of Rainbow Brownies, but a quick pep talk from David had the little lad up and running before I could put down my cloth.

My heart went all melty all over again.
