SKINTELLIGENT TIP:

There are only two reasons to ‘pop’ a pimple

To relieve pain. Often, cystic acne lesions can be extremely painful. Ideally, you would not try to ‘pop’ it or extract the cyst contents, but sometimes the pain is so bad it is the only way to feel better – but there is no good technique for this (the one explained in the point below isn’t great for cysts because there is no whitehead specifically). The risk of bad scarring is high, which is why this is generally a bad idea. If you have a painful, sore, inflamed spot it’s best to get it injected by a dermatologist with a little bit of intralesional steroid. It will go down dramatically within a few hours when done correctly. Definitely see a consultant dermatologist if you want to go down this route. Otherwise, just leave it alone – it will get better!

For cosmetic reasons. Having a whitehead filled with pus on your face is just not very pretty to look at. If you want to get rid of the pus, use a very fine sterile needle and, with clean hands, very gently stick the needle straight into the top of the spot. This should not hurt. Then use cotton buds to gently press on either side to extract the contents. Try not to just squeeze them with your fingers because this damages the surrounding skin and will just make the whole thing a big mess.
