Grade your surgery.

I give myself a letter grade for the completion of every surgical procedure and share it with my residents and fellows. Often, the grade is harsh. The intent is to foster self-critique. Talent hotbeds are full of little tests. The tests aren’t scientific, and they are not treated as verdicts—they’re far more like targeted workouts, invented by the performers and their teachers. For example, Tiger Woods created a test in which he has to hit a certain percentage of shots inside a certain distance each day (80 percent of eight irons within 20 feet, for example). I often grade each individual component of surgery to further break down the analysis. I take notes on the areas that need improvement and reflect on them on a regular basis. In preparation for another surgery, I make a forceful plan not to repeat the same mistakes.
