Reuben helped push the piano back into the middle of the stage where it needed to be for their opening act the next day. If he remembered the schedule right they had a matinee first. As second in command to the head stagehand he was determined to not only do his job well, but do it so well that it drew attention. The good kind of attention.
Dusting off his hands, he stepped back and ran into someone directly behind him.
“Watch it,” a voice cried out.
Reuben turned to see a tall man with fine features wearing an expensive suit coat and an expression of displeasure.
“I'm sorry, sir,” he said, swallowing his immediate reaction to say they were both at fault.
“I should say you are. Don’t you watch where you’re going around here?”
Slow burning anger rose to the surface but Reuben tamped it down. It would do him no good to lose control over a silly incident with a prideful man.
“I do, but apparently that didn’t help me this time. Again, I apologize.” He forced a smile that probably wouldn’t convince anyone, and dipped his head as he turned to go.
“Listen here, boy,” the man staid, stepping closer to him, “You’ll do well to learn manners. You never know whom you could be talking to.”
For a moment Reuben’s mind went to the worst-case scenarios. This man was a wealthy patron who donated a lot of money to the theater. He was a good friend of Mr. Young’s. He was….
No. One look at this man—one close look anyway—would betray the fact that he was only important in his own eyes and was using his supposed station to put others below him. A slight stain on his just too-short pants, the uneven grain of his suit coat, and the discernable scuff on the tips of his shoes gave him away.
“I have manners, thank you. And I know exactly whom I’m talking to.”
Something flickered in the man’s eyes and he stepped back. “Good day.”
Reuben watched him walk away, his back straight and shoulders arrogantly high. He nodded in the direction of Mable as he walked by and Reuben felt something snap inside of him. If he even tried to convince her—
Well, Reuben couldn't know what he would convince her of, but he wouldn’t let the man’s subterfuge go unnoticed if something happened.
“Hey, Reuben, are we practicing tonight?”
Reuben turned to see Samuel, his bowler hat clutched in his hands. He looked anxious.
“I had thought we might but…is something wrong?”
Samuel shrugged. “I just…there’s something going on down at Billard’s Pub that I wanted to go to.”
Samuel was always running off to the pub at the drop of a hat. Didn’t he know that practice time was crucial for them? Then again, they had practiced extra the night before.
“It’s okay. Go.”
“You sure?” He looked as if he desperately wanted the answer to be yes.
“Yes. Have fun.”
Samuel grinned and took off without another word from Reuben. He looked around and was surprised to find the stage empty. Of course it was.
