Bad Habit

Another Friday morning came around, and once again, I wasn’t looking forward to the weekend because I wouldn’t get to see or talk to Simone until Tuesday. “I hate the weekends now.”

“Why?” Per usual, Simone was cuddled close to me, her legs crossed, her calf resting against my chin. Her head was lowered as she shuffled through songs in my digital library.

While she entertained herself with my phone, I shamelessly sniffed her hair. I know it’s weird, but I couldn’t help myself. Everything about her smelled wonderful. “You know why.”

We weren’t lovers. We hadn’t even kissed yet. But we behaved like we’d been together for years, which would make anyone wonder; why the hell hadn’t she given me her number yet?

“I’m going to spend the whole weekend wishing I could talk to you.”

She lifted her head and beamed up at me. “Who knows. Maybe you won’t have to wait that long.” She went back to examining my playlists, and I went back to inhaling her scent. I imagined we looked like an interesting pair to those around us.

“Whoa—where’d that come from?” she suddenly said. “You got a Latinx Kardashian dropping some fire in your DMs, boy.”

It took a moment for her comment to reach my brain. Did she say Latinx Kardashian? Confused, I perked up. “What?”

She put the phone in my face. “Can we both agree that the thirst is real?”

An image of Evelyn lounging on a bed of pillows in a lacy red number that barely covered her assets with her knees parted screamed from the screen. Written across the image was a message. ‘Always yours, papi.’

My mouth fell open as my gut climbed up in my throat. A burning sensation rose behind my eyes. I clenched my teeth. No, noo, no—no, nooo! For a second, I couldn’t breathe. WHY?! Why the fuck doesn’t she just leave me alone? I took the phone from Simone, well more like snatched it from her hand.

Simone’s eyes lowered and her lips drew tight. “Yo, don’t get your panties in a wad, I wasn’t poking around in your messages. It just popped up.”

I knew that. And I knew it wasn’t her fault. Still, I was boiling in rage. Mainly because that text made it seem like something was still going on between me and Evelyn, when there wasn’t.

Silently, we sat through the rest of the ride. It was so awkward and uncomfortable. I should say something, but I didn’t know what to say.

Simone drew back, more mentally than physically.

I could still feel the heat of her body, and I could smell the sweet aroma she carried on her skin and in her hair, but I couldn’t feel her. The mystical connection and sensual spark we shared dulled in that instant.

How could I say it? How could I tell her that my anger wasn’t directed toward her, but rather toward the woman who made it a hobby of playing with my heart for nearly a year. “I—I didn’t mean—”

“Don’t sweat it, it’s cool.” She shifted in the seat, slightly turning her back to me and began fiddling with her phone.
