'So, this is it,' said Rory.
'Looks like it,' the Doctor agreed.
'This is where I'm going to live out the rest of
my days. In Terminal 4000.'
'Yup.'
'I'll never think about leaving, even though I
can see the TARDIS right outside the window.
Even though I know my wife is in there.'
'That's about the size of it.'
'Because the Desponds will have sucked every
last drop of hope out of me.'
'There is a bright side,' said the Doctor. 'Two
bright sides, in fact.'
He looked along the departure lounge. The
spaceships had finished boarding. Cap's charter
ship had disengaged its locking clamps and was
already pulling away.
The evacuation was complete. The stranded
passengers had escaped.
'And the other bright side?' asked Rory.
He still had the fire extinguisher. He was aiming it
more selectively now, to preserve its contents. Even
so, the white foam was coming out in fits and starts.
'There's no food,' said the Doctor. 'So, 'the rest
of our days' won't be all that long'
The extinguisher was completely empty. Rory
threw it at the Desponds. The gesture bought
them about half a second.
Then the six Desponds charged forward.
Amy had hung up the TARDIS phone. She
glared at it as if sheer willpower could make it
ring again.
'The Doctor gave you instructions?' asked Roger.
'Yeah, he told me what to do,' said Amy, 'just
not when. He said the timing was important.'
Her hand went to the big lever by the phone. She
hesitated.
'You should do it,' said Roger.
'But what if I time it wrong? What if I should
have waited longer?'
'What if you wait too long?' Roger pointed to
the scanner screen. 'Look!'
Amy looked up. 'The ships,' she breathed.
'They're leaving!'
'The Doctor did it,' said Roger.
'He did,' agreed Amy. 'Maybe that's why he
never came back to the phone. Maybe the Doctor
and Rory are on one of those ships, and they don't
need this after all.'
She looked at the lever, doubtfully.
'Or not,' she said. 'I don't know. What... what
do you think?'
'I think you've got to have hope,' said Roger.
Amy looked at him, surprised. He was right, of
course. She just hadn't expected him to be the one
to say it.
She nodded. Roger held up his hand. He had
crossed his fingers for her.
Amy closed her eyes. She drew in a deep breath.
She pulled the lever.
The first Despond leapt at Rory's throat. He
managed to bat it away, but the second was right
behind it.
The Doctor was under attack too. The other
creatures had closed in around their prey, keeping
the two of them contained. There was nowhere
to run.
Then Rory heard a familiar sound. A wheezing,
groaning sound.
A blue haze appeared in the air between him
and the six Desponds.
The sound grew louder, and the blue haze
thicker. A springing Despond was flung back in
mid-air by some invisible force.
Then, Rory could see the dog-like creatures
no longer. The spaceport was gone too. He was
standing inside the TARDIS, by the console. The
Doctor was still beside him. So was Amy, and -
Rory did a double-take at this - Roger.
The Doctor turned to Amy. 'I thought I told
you to wait for my cue,' he said. Then a grin broke
out on his face. 'Good job you didn't, though.'
'Good to see you too,' said Amy.
The Doctor ran around the console, operating
it with his usual manic energy.
