THE COMMODORE RODGERS AND THE ATLANTIC: WHALERS ASHORE

Far from her homeport of New Bedford, Massachusetts, on a Pacific whaling expedition, the Commodore Rodgers was riding increasingly rising swells off Monterey Bay when a sudden southwest squall caused the ship to lose her mizzenmast and go ashore on the morning of November 19, 1836.
