Chapter 31
Papers flooded Jackie’s long red oak dining room table as she worked tirelessly on her latest client case, trying to work the numbers and also gather all the information she needed in order to prove her latest client’s ex-husband’s indiscretions. A monetary value had to be attached to each transgression, and alimony alone—especially for this particular case, involving her client’s ex-husband’s usage of marital funds in order to set his mistress up in an apartment five miles away—simply was not enough.
Jackie scrubbed her way through the paperwork, flustered because she was still not finding all she needed to prove her case. She had on her journalistic as well as her legalistic hat, and all the whos, whats, whens, wheres, and whys simply weren’t adding up.
Like most Friday nights, Jackie had brought her work home with her and hadn’t stopped working on it, not even to make time to cook dinner. For now, her No. 2 pencil was the main course.
Jackie took a sip of orange juice while perusing the documents, missed her mouth, and accidentally spilled OJ all over her new beige suit jacket.
“Oh, shoot.” Jackie jumped in her seat once she realized the damage. She sprang up, removed her jacket and revealed its gold shell, then retreated to her walk-in bedroom closet to look for another jacket.

Jackie took hold of the peach photo album and wiped the dust off it. Instead of retreating to the dining room with her new suit jacket, she retreated to her living room couch holding on to her new relic, which she hadn’t opened in seven years.
She took a deep breath then opened it to the first page, which revealed an image that at the time signified one of the happiest days of her life, but was now a painful reminder of what was or what could have been—her wedding picture.
It was the one taken just after the two of them said “I do,” kissed, and were standing on the church’s porch headed out to the limo while being greeted by onlookers and well-wishers who thought it appropriate to throw rice their way.
Tall, dark, and extremely handsome, especially in his black suit and teal-colored silk tie and handkerchief that matched Jackie’s three bridesmaids, the photo showed her new husband’s strength and charm as Jackie remembered how he clutched her right hand so tightly that day, as if to say he would never leave her side, and how his gleaming smile made everyone he glanced at feel that they were special.
Jackie sure felt special—especially that day. She remembered the day Dexter stole her heart away and promised her a lifetime of sheer
