Jeannette and Hazel began their respective positions at the University of Kansas City (hereafter KCU) in September 1952. Hazel was thrilled to have a full-time position as an assistant professor of classics and history, but feared that association with the controversial Kinsey research project might tarnish her reputation. Keenly aware of the gradual decline in classics programs, she responded to a question about her previous employment somewhat dismissively, noting that she had been a translator on a nameless Indiana University research project.6 Jeannette, who felt less vulnerable than Hazel, took great pride in her affiliation with the noted sex researcher. Beginning her position as reference and interlibrary loan librarian with characteristic gusto, she in short order became “the great cajoler, coercer, and arbiter” in the travails of KCU graduate students. She also found time to join the University of Kansas City Book Club and to participate in area library meetings. In 1954 she became a regular contributor to an in-house publication known as the Library Memo.7
