I took a break [from the brothel] for a while and got a social media marketing internship. I obviously already had a lot of experience with social media marketing already, so I thought the internship would be fairly easy. The work was easy. . . . But I couldn’t let on when things were easy, because I was supposed to be a newbie. My coworkers and boss didn’t know about my sex work, and even if they did, it would be awkward for me to bring it up so casually. I never wanted to seem like I already knew something since I didn’t have [that skill] on my résumé. I was often frustrated. I felt totally micromanaged on stuff that didn’t need someone looking over my shoulder constantly and monitoring my every move to make sure I was doing every little thing right. I used Twitter a lot while I was a sex worker and Twitter was one of [the non-sex work company’s] main platforms for marketing.
