3. Some outreaches are just for a season. Once we begin an outreach and experience good results, we need to understand it may be just for a season. We started out visiting widows, saw good fruit from it, and today we still serve a whole lot of widows. But during the same time, we had a lot of opportunity to serve single moms by helping them move. We saw a lot of lives changed by doing that then, but today we don’t seem to see as much of this opportunity. And we’re not struggling to create those opportunities; we realize that it was simply something God had us doing just for that season.

There have been many things we have done over the years—wonderful ideas producing wonderful fruit—but we are no longer involved in them at the same level today. For example, we distributed a lot of truckloads of food and supplies, and it was awesome and we saw some very exciting results. But being a relay for commodities and handling that degree of massive distribution is something we don’t do in the same way now. We developed systems that still allow us to distribute large quantities of goods, but they look much different than our original unload-a-semi-into-the-sanctuary system.

Sometimes a season of involvement in an outreach will end because a better way is developed to meet the need or the need changes. We must be sensitive to the fluid nature of our community’s needs and continually adjust our outreach to stay effective. We cannot expect that what worked well yesterday will be the best way to meet the need today.
