Understanding the Beast
Anatoly Onoprienko was the epitome of nightmares. He would seek out homes that were relatively isolated, and under the cover of darkness would break his way in, then brutally murder every person in the house. He was a man so cold that he could have a conversation with a young child moments before bashing her to death with a hammer. Onoprienko was the man you would lie in bed at night and pray he didnât knock on your door.
Onoprienko initially was a burglar, breaking into homes and stealing whatever he could get his hands on so he could sell it on and make some money. The first murders he committed were during such a burglary, and he killed the family in the house so there would be no witnesses. These murders were more a case of killing out of perceived necessity. But, from then on, his objective seemed to change. Sure, he still robbed the houses he entered, but financial gain was no longer the reason behind his actions.
After the first murders, Onoprienko developed a taste for killing, and he began entering homes at night for the purpose of killing the occupants. He would always shoot the adults first, to remove potential threats, and then he would target the children. But when he killed the children, he chose to either attack them with a hammer or sometimes an axe. These murders were up close and brutal, unlike the somewhat âcleanâ shooting deaths of the adults. Itâs almost as though the children were the real targets and the adults just got in the way.
Onoprienko said himself that he would never stop killing, and that the only way to stop him was to execute him. He claimed when first interviewed that he tried to stop himself when the urges came, but he obviously didnât try hard enough. He could easily have gone to a medical professional, a psychiatrist or even the authorities and sought help for these thoughts he was having. But he chose not to. The truth of the matter is that he simply enjoyed the act of taking another personâs life.
In his own explanation, Onoprienko claimed he had no feelings of remorse, sympathy or empathy for his victims. He just didnât care about what he had done or how it affected the loved ones left behind to grieve. The only important thing to him was how it made him feel. Like a blood lust, Onoprienko went out night after night seeking more victims. He tried to make sure he wasnât caught either, by eliminating any potential witnesses. But then he started to kill more randomly, such as the victims driving down the road. He was out of control.
There are records in existence that show Onoprienko had schizophrenia, but these have never been released. Some of his behaviors, statements and beliefs certainly seem to back up this diagnosis. But this doesnât make a man a cold-blooded killer. Onoprienko wanted to hold the world record for murder victims. He went to his death knowing that he had failed in that quest.
